Hi Brummie--This is the thread this was originally (as far as I know) posted on.
i thought he was a real character!
he may have killed himself but i was hoping that he survived.
i don't think he is on the us card deck.
I thought he was hilarious.
There's a great grass-roots site called www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com
Full of quotes and such. It's a hoot.
i was just thinking about some information i read on a animal rights website (peta.org) and decided i would get your feedback since you seem like a fair crowd.. do you think the majority of people in the u.s or in industrialized nations know about the horrible conditions that animals face everyday under the context of food production?
do you believe that if the conditions that animals faced were exposed on the tv screen as much as say long distance telephone service there would be as much consumption of animal products?
if you are a meet eater, ( i honestly don't mean to belittle you in anyway) why do you eat meat if you are aware that it's production causes extreme pain to other living things?
A stupid trend that I have noticed at the health food stores is vegetarian cat food. This is so stupid, I have a hard time believing that it is allowed to be on the shelves. Cats are carnivores and must have meat. To deny your kitty meat, in order to force it to comply with some sentimental human philosophy, is also animal abuse because the cat is slowly being starved to death.
Robyn, I can't stop giggling. That's hilarious. Vegetarian cat food is funny in and of itself, and trying to imagine some pinhead PETA freak nodding smugly to themselves while loading up on it to feed their feline friend is enough to make me wet myself.
Vegetarian/Animal Rights fanatics are just like the members of other extremist groups out there. Almost always ridiculously pompous, sanctimonious, illogically passionate, and small-minded to the extreme. And so, apparently, are their cats.
the horrible murder and mutilation of laci peterson and the death of her baby boy, connor, has been in the news a very long time.
now the bodies have been found and identified--and finally, scott has been arrested and charged.. there is just something very strange about all of this, and i was hoping someone might have some information.
from scott's expressions and behavior, it appears as if he is guilty, but has no remorse.
Even though the evidence points to Scott as being the murderer, we must not forget he is only charged with her murder. He is still presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If found guilty and convicted by a jury of his peers, he will hopefully get what’s coming to him.
I agree, even though my emotions tell me that he killed his wife and unborn child and should rot for it. The bottom line is that we just don't know what happened. He might have accidentally killed her during a disagreement and then got rid of her body, he may have calculatedly killed and disposed of her, or he may not have killed her at all and is just one more snake of a man who cheated on his wife but wasn't the least bit responsible for her death. His altered appearance may have been him trying to flee due to his guilt, or trying to flee to escape incarceration for a crime he is innocent of.
I did see on CNN this morning that there was a body of a missing pregnant woman found in January in the same area, and that one other pregnant woman is also listed as missing. It's not totally out of the realm of possibility that she was the victim of some sort of freak psycho killer who preys on expecting women. Since they have arrested him, I hope they have sufficient evidence that points toward his guilt that will enable them to convict him in a court of law. If he is not guilty, no matter how distasteful his behavior in his marriage, I would hope that evidence to that end would present itself as well (I'm not gonna hold my breath, though).
The bottom line is that we just don't know. I hate that!
friends,.
i have a bit of a dilema.
years ago a young man began to pursue a relationship with my daughter.
Thunder, I'm aching with empathy for you. I don't envy your position, and I think you're reacting the way any good father would and should. I won't presume to offer you any advice about the specific situation you are in, I imagine that my husband would be just as upset as you are about the way your daughter has been, and has allowed herself to be, treated. Thinking about my own daughter (who's about 14 years away from dating!) the following things occurred to me:
1. Your daughter has a little girl to think about. It might be a useful idea (even if not immediately effective, it's good to plant the seed) to ask her to imagine her daughter 20 years from now in the same situation. Would she want her little girl to be involved with a man who has acted the way that he has, and treated her in the same manner? I'm sure the answer would be no. It might be enough to get her thinking about why the same situation that she would hate for her little girl to be in is acceptable for herself.
2. Regardless of how evil, cruel, despicable and snake-like her father is, I would try very hard not to disparage him openly in front of your grandbaby when she's old enough to understand your words and attitude. Genetically, she's half his, and I imagine that it would be hard for a child to separate your dislike of her father with the fact that-for better or for worse-he's her biological dad.
Everything in me wants to tell you to just run the bastard over in the street, but that's hardly an option. Your little girl needs your love and understanding, and her little girl needs to have her Grandpa around so that she grows up learning about how good, honest men treat the women in their lives.
today on montel he is discussing a subject i just did a speech on yesterday.
it's about the medication of children for adhd.
1. that ritalin is a class ii drug and is on the same as cocaine.
I think the moral of this thread is to be an expert on your child and be an expert on whatever disorder they are being diagnosed/misdiagnosed with. Do your research and know the sources and whether, or not, they have an agenda. Do not be intimidated by "experts" and school officials. End the end, you and your child are going to have the live with the decisions that are going to be made.
Hallelujah, Amen, Right-on, and "What Andee said!"

Secondly a "chiropractor" kept Thunder from having to have back surgery so the condecending attitude against them is WRONG.
I did not post anything condescending toward chiropractors. I love my chiropractor. I feel great after I go to him, and he totally helped control this evil headache I had after a bicycle accident last year. I just wouldn't go to him to diagnose anything that didn't involve my spinal column and it's alignment as related to my comfort.
NO an osteopath is a full medical doctor that also is taught to look at the body as a whole, the do adjustments and also will do more homeopathic type of care. They ACTUALLY are very good doctors the are DO this again was something that you can type in search and find out the correct information before citing something inflammatory and totally incorrect.
I did do some reading on DO's after I read the article yesterday, and the information I read (very similar to what you posted) sounded to me pretty much like pop-science (sounds an awful lot like Chriorpactic medicine to me-Chirpractic discipline claims to be able to link everything from liver disease to mental instability by cracking your back, too). I am willing to say that I wouldn't disregard an osteopath's opinion in general, I don't reject holistic medicine as a discipline, nor did I ever say that I did. I also wouldn't blatantly disregard every DO's opinion on ADHD. But do I disregard what this specific doctor, asserting strong anti-pscychology sentiment due to her affiliation with The 'Church' of Scientology says? Yes, I do. Her agenda can't be trusted, and therefore her information is automatically suspect.
i need opinions from parents.
first, let me share my situation.
i am 24 years old and my husband is 33. we have been married two years and are thinking about having kids.
Hi Stinky-
My husband and I are nine years apart as well, adds one more wrinkle into the mix when starting a family, doesn't it?
First of all, good for you for putting some thought into your future and for thinking ahead before making any life-changing decisions. I applaud your ability to lay out your situation logically, and then attempt to fit your decisions into your long-term goals and plans. This is a great first step toward planning a family and still achieving your educational and financial goals. My best advice for you is to weigh all of the evidence, come to a decision, go for it, and then take your carefully considered and structured plan, crumple it up into a ball, and try for two points in the trash can in the corner of the room! :)
Just kidding. Sort of. You can achieve everything you want for yourself and your family, no question. You can have a child, go to college, work and have a successful marriage all at once. I am working on a post graduate degree right now, have two children, a demanding job and a great husband. I remember tackling these same issues before we had our first child, and I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to achieve, and how I wanted to get there. Now, almost eight years later, I have the things I wanted and am achieving what I set out to do, but I made serious alterations to my original plan, and my goals changed considerably in the years following my original decisions. As my children grew, so did I, and I found that what I wanted 2, 5, even 8 years ago grew and changed with all of us. The fact that I'm not exactly where I thought I would be 8 years ago doesn't matter, because I have found out that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. And it's a pretty cool place.
What I'm really saying is that if you weigh all of the options and decide whether or not to have a child, your life will almost certainly not go exactly the way you planned it anyway! Not only will the addition of a child into your lives create a whole new series of choices for you, but you will change in the next several years too--you'll find that your plans and goals will change, and you'll alter your plan accordingly. I once read a great analogy about having children that has always stuck with me. You start your life at the end of a hallway with an endless series of open doors before you, representing all of the experiences possible in your lifetime. Your life is an absolute clean slate, and you can choose any door you like. But with each door you choose, other doors will be closed and locked as a result. No doubt about it, having children closes a lot of doors for you. Never again will you be able to make decisions without considering how they will affect this new human being you're responsible for. You'll never watch any news story again without thinking "What if that were my child?" You can't pick up at a moment's notice and run off to surf in Mexico, or buy a two door car :). But not having children closes an equal number of doors. You'll never see your child look at you and know that you're the most important person in their world. You'll never swell with pride as you watch your children make their own good decisions, or pick them up after they've made bad ones. You'll never learn to love your husband all over again in his role as a father. You just need to pick a door and walk through it.
You'll make the choice you think is right based on all the information you have. And then you'll revisit what you need and want based on what is right you afterwards. Good luck! It's one heck of a ride...

For the fourth time I will say that it amazes me that all the information that there is on ADHD etc. You ignore that not just one source was cited.
This thread began with, and all of the subsequent replies were added because of, a numerical list of inflammatory assertions about the validity of ADHD as a disorder and the evils of the drug Ritalin. I was not ignoring that other sources were cited, I was presenting background information about the source of the of the primary, and only, information presented as "What parents need to know".
Also just because one is a Scientoligst does not make one wrong,
While I agree that the mere fact that someone embraces loony religious ideology doesn't make all of the information they present incorrect, the source of the data and the motives for presenting it become VERY important if that source has as one of the very religious 'tenets' that ALL psychiatric medicine is a sham, and that no psychological therapy or doctor-prescribed drug treatment is ever appropriate. (Except their own crackpot psychological 'training', of course) In the same way that I would not give any credit to a list of evils perpetrated by non-whites written by a white supremacist group, or a list of reasons why common religious organizations are bad written by the Watchtower, I choose to look to information without such a blatant bias for statistics on ADHD and common medications.
unlike the dubs most scientilogists are educated, many are Dr.'s etc.
Most are? Even if that were remotely true, it still doesn't lend any credibility to their seriously crazy belief system. The "Dr." on the Montel williams show was an Osteopath. That's a glofied way to say "Chirpractor", and I wouldn't take advice from my chiropractor about my child's psychological condition any more than I'd let my hairdresser tell me what was wrong with my plumbing. The fact that there are scientologists out there with impressive degrees proves that even smart people can be duped into believing very stupid things.
Scientology is a mid-20th century created 'religion' that founded by a third-rate science fiction writer with no credentials who's gigantic collection of incoherent, bizarre stories and essays are used as the 'scriptures' for it's followers. (If you think C.T. Russell's writings were loony, just take a look at this guy's prose...) From some of his sketches on a few sheets of paper, they believe that, and I swear I'm not making this up, that millions of years ago there was an overpopulation problem in a remote sector of the galaxy so a guy named "Xenu" took several million beings and placed them on two of earth's mountain tops and detonated a hydrogen bomb under each of them. The theory is that all people on earth have several of these exterminated souls within them, and they use a mind-weakening process called "auditing" to expel them from the body, thus eventually leaving the person with only their own soul inside of them. People spend tens of thousands of dollars to progress through the 'levels' of training and some even sign "one-million year" contracts to receive their auditing training for free in return for their work for the organization. The 'church' is wealthy beyond the point that the Watchtower could ever DREAM of being, and runs numerous organizations that are all fronts for their ludicrous beliefs. I suggest you take a look at a few ex-scientologist web sites, the stories there make a lot of ex-jw stories sound like a day a the beach.
The point is that the initial posted information, due to it's origins, is immediately suspect and not worthy of my trust. There are several other sources that are more credible out there, and I am not making any claims to their validity or lack thereof.

Quite by accident, I saw this article today on the net and it reminded me that we need to do our homework before blanket-belief in any "trustworthy" source. Scientology is a cult-group even more wacky than the JWs, and understanding the source of the information on Montel's show lends it even less credibility in my eyes:
MONTEL AIRS By RICHARD JOHNSON with Paula Froelich and Chris Wilson |
WAS Montel Williams duped into promoting the Church of Scientology on his talk show? Earlier this week, Williams - who is not a Scientologist - devoted a show to "children abused through the use of prescription psychiatric drugs such as Ritalin, specifically given to alleviate the symptoms of attention-deficit disorder." But the featured organization on the segment was the "Citizens Commission on Human Rights." CCHR, founded by Scientology in 1969, is an anti-psychiatry "watchdog group" that once described psychiatry as a "malignant disease" that "threatens society and ultimately mankind." During the show, CCHR president Bruce Wiseman compared "your friendly neighborhood psychiatrist" to drug lords in Colombia. Appearing with him, Scientology celebrity Juliette Lewis urged the audience to make "drug manufacturers and psychiatrists accountable." Williams also introduced cameo clips by church followers Anne Archer and Catherine Bell. Noted Scientology-watcher Rick Ross writes on cultnews.com, "At no time did the talk show host explore the wider agenda of the CCHR and/or its antipathy for the entire mental health profession . . . the S-word (Scientology) was never even uttered." Ross adds: "Many of the claims made by the CCHR have been labeled 'preposterous' by experts . . . Montel offered up instead 'expert' Mary Ann Block, a CCHR board member who . . . is an osteopath." Block claimed that attention-deficit disorder is a "made-up, psychiatric label." Ross notes this is not the first time Williams has aired a Scientology-based episode. "Earlier this year, Montel repeated a program with Scientologist Kelly Preston, wife of Scientologist John Travolta, that touted the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, about "environmental toxins" that hurt kids. "It seems that Montel has either gone from dumb to dumber, or is so desperate for celebrity appearances to boost his ratings, he will shill almost anything," Ross wrote. A rep for Williams said: "In the 12 years that 'The Montel Williams Show' has been on the air, guests have never been discriminated against based on religious beliefs. We would not discriminate against someone like Mr. Rick Ross . . . we welcome him to the show to discuss his bias." |
